Blueprint | Creating UTM Tracking URLs in HS

You can reference the Tracking URLs section of this Google Doc (provided by Blueprint) or follow the steps below (these are the same steps in the Google Doc):

  1. Click ‘Reports’ dropdown in Hubspot and go to ‘Analytics Tools’

  2. Scroll to the bottom and click the ‘Tracking URL Builder’ box

  3. Click the ‘Create tracking URL’ box in the upper right corner of the page

  4. Paste the URL that is being tracked into the URL field at the top of the form

  5. Enter the The UTM campaign noted in the blog Word doc or provided by Nicole (if no UTM campaign is provided, double check with Nicole)

    Source will be:

    • For LinkedIn or Twitter: Organic social
      • If Organic social is selected, UTM source needs to be set to either “LinkedIn” or “Twitter” depending on which platform the URL is being prepared for

    • There may be other scenarios for this setting, depending on the need, but anything outside of ‘Other campaigns’ or ‘Organic social’ is rare

UTM Term will specify which send/page is being tracked. The entry for this field will often be an abbreviated version of the email/page name (ie. An email for a marketing webinar in 2021 might be logged as ‘marketingwebinar21’) – the term will be specified in blog Word docs, but if it’s unclear what to use for the term, check with Nicole

UTM Content is not necessary for our data tracking purposes but can be helpful in managing the list of tracked URLs when there are multiple URLs tied to the same campaign/source/medium/term. This happens most often when creating tracked URLs for Nasdaq submissions. For example, if there are multiple tracked URLs needed for a single Nasdaq submission, UTM Content helps distinguish one link from another. The screenshot below shows how the bubble blog submission had a link to the strategies, adaptive allocation, and process pages – and entering a UTM Content term helps you quickly find that link and distinguish between the links in the list in Hubspot. When a UTM Content term is helpful, simply decide on something short and descriptive.

Click “Create”, and use the “Copy short URL” button that appears when you hover over the new entry to copy and paste the tracked URL into the accompanying Word doc or sent to Nicole via Slack.
